Screen Time vs Safari blockers vs system-wide filtering

There are three common ways to block content on an iPhone, and they are not really rivals. They cover different gaps. Here is what each one does, side by side, and how to pick, or better, how to combine them.

The three approaches

Screen Time is Apple's built-in filter. It works across every browser on iOS and it is free. A Safari content blocker, like Escape, adds a much bigger curated list in Safari and can be made hard to switch off. System-wide DNS filtering blocks at the network level, so it reaches inside apps, not just browsers, but it takes more setup.

Which to pick

For most people, the answer is not one of these, it is a stack. Start with Screen Time as the free base layer. Add a Safari blocker for the bigger list and the tougher lock, which is where Escape lives. Add DNS filtering on top only if you also want adult content blocked inside apps. If you only do two, Screen Time plus a Safari blocker covers most of what an individual needs. The complete iPhone guide walks through setting each one up, and Escape vs Screen Time goes deeper on the first two.
